Treatments & Conditions

Abuse in Childhood

There is an increased awareness of the extent and consequences of abuse in children and adults.  In adults, the traumatic memories may be long-buried and relate to abuse in childhood but they can be treated successfully and with sensitivity.  With children, the treatment is often surprisingly short, enabling the survivors to move on quickly and so minimising or eradicating any long-term damage. Moving Minds’ network of clinicians specialising in this sector are experienced and closely supported and managed by our head office multi-disciplinary team.

Combat Veterans

We have specialist knowledge of combat veterans through both treating traumatised individuals and training of clinicians by EMDR Extra, a sister company to Moving Minds. These trained specialists work on the front line abroad and back home in the UK, treating members of the armed forces who suffer from PTSD. EMDR has been found to be particularly helpful and accepted by soldiers.

Critical Incidents

Critical incidents do not only affect the people directly involved but can be very traumatic for observers and people linked to the event. After a critical incident it normally takes one month for natural healing to take place, but before that people may show signs of an Acute Stress reaction, with symptoms such as nightmares, intrusive thoughts, low mood, anger, irritability, avoidance. NICE recommends against critical incident debriefing. Instead, Moving Minds offer a proactive support service, which has had an excellent success rate.

Difficulties Relating to Absense from Work

Roughly 30% of absence from work is related to psychological difficulties.  This is often categorised as “stress”, and if targeted early, can be very amenable to psychological treatment.  For many low-level psychological difficulties or for early intervention, CBT-based telephone support by our experienced staff usually equips people with the tools needed to return to work.  When the difficulties are more complex in nature or have been present for a long time face to face intervention may be required.  Our therapists can provide solution-focused treatment to help return to work or remain in work.

Difficulties Relating to Personal Injury

Incidents involving personal injury are usually traumatic experiences.  Depending on the nature of the injury or incident, the person involved may suffer psychological distress.  The more severe the accident and the more personal the trauma the more likely a person is to suffer psychological distress. Common difficulties after a personal injury such as a road traffic accident include post traumatic stress disorder, travel anxiety, adjustment disorder, anxiety and depression. Moving Minds deals with a large volume of personal injury cases and assists clients to return to their pre-accident level of functioning

Evidence Based Treatments

Moving Minds provides only CBT and EMDR, both of which have substantial evidence bases and are the only treatments recommended by NICE (The National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence) for PTSD and a number of other conditions

Questionable Treatments

Unfortunately there are other therapies such as “Rewind” therapy and “Human Givens” as well as certain kinds of hypnosis, which are increasingly widely used, sometimes by practitioners with scant basic mental health training. Therapies such as these may be best avoided until there has been the same level of extensive research available as there is for CBT and EMDR Moving Minds is a signatory to the Rehabilitation Code of Best Practice. We work both independently of the litigation process and also, in the case of medico-legal reports, for the Courts.
