Employers / Health and Safety Officers / Employers' Liability Insurers
Trauma in the workplace, such as after critical incidents, is unexpected and often unplanned for. Should critical incidents occur it can cause significant disruption, both at an individual and corporate level. However, if the possibility of trauma is anticipated and planned for its disruptive effects can be effectively minimised.
Trauma planning may involve activity, before a traumatic event or after a traumatic event. Moving Minds offers pre-incident trauma awareness training, teaching managers and health and safety officers “psychological first aid”
High risk occupations may include:
• Emergency service employees
• Commercial outlets such as shops
• Security guards
• Factory floors and assembly lines
• Public transport
• Commercial drivers
• The construction industry
• Mining and extractive industries
• After-dark retailers
Should a traumatic event occur it can cause severe and lasting psychological ill health (in addition to any physical harm) to a minority of employees. However, management involved with the above occupations or activities can minimise the effect of trauma by appropriate training of staff.
Training enables those present at the scene of critical events to act appropriately and supportively to help prevent chronic psychological illness and litigation This prepares managers to handle the human aspect of critical incident by knowing the principles of "psychological first aid."
Personal Injury Insurance Technical Claims Managers and Case Handlers
Training to recognise psychological trauma and the influence of psychological illness on long term psychological ill health, absence from work, understanding medico-legal reports and commissioning appropriate psychological treatments.
Post-Incident Trauma Awareness Training
Even with a well trained workforce a traumatic event may be very distressing. The rapid involvement of a counsellor (rather than trained trauma-focused clinician) or immediate debriefing is now known to be ineffectual and even potentially harmful.
There is a role however for a considered and planned traumatic event discussion. Help after the critical incident can happen on site. Education and normalisation of symptoms help people settle down. In some cases individuals may need face to face treatment.
Solicitors and Fee Owners
Personal injury lawyers are closely involved in the management of their clients’ psychological injuries. They are supported by fee earners, paralegals and other support staff. Some of these psychological issues may be outside solicitors’ pre-existing skill base and experience.
Moving Minds offers training to solicitors and their colleagues to help them make sense of psychological issues. In turn this enables them to better evaluate reports and assess the appropriateness or otherwise of recommendations. Training also attracts CPD points.
Training can be offered to individuals or to groups at all levels, from case handlers to barristers. We will also soon be offering web-based seminars.
Specialist Training
Moving Minds offers regular training days to specialists in topics relevant to assessment and treatment of psychological disorders. Past topics have included treating chronic and phantom limb pain, neuro-psychology, travel phobia and PTSD
Please contact the office for details of the next training day, or join our network to be notified automatically.
