Psychological Assessments

Moving Minds offers a variety of psychological assessments types including bespoke assessments to meet our clients’ specific needs. All assessments are performed by experienced mental health practitioners such as clinical psychologists, psychiatrists or other suitably qualified clinicians and are overseen by an in-house medical advisory committee and the psychological case managers handling the case.

Assessment for Treatment

This report is useful when medico-legal or other psychological/psychiatric reports are available but not current, in low value cases with small reserves, or in cases where the referrer needs information about the possible role of pre-incident history, diagnosis, motivation for treatment, type of treatment and session numbers. Psychometric tests are included. A medical summary is added.

Brief review report

This assessment offers information in an “at a glance” form, includes psychometrics, a diagnosis if available and treatment recommendations including the recommended number of treatment sessions, as well as motivation for treatment.

Desktop assessments

These do not involve face to face contact.  There may be a variety of reports available from different professionals in a case where many treatment interventions have been attempted without success. These may include e.g. psychiatric, neuropsychological and medical or orthopaedic reports.  In high value cases the Moving Minds’ medical advisory committee will review these reports and make recommendations based on an integrated assessment of available information. The referring party in such cases have the benefit of the experience of senior clinicians evaluating the case.

Occupational Rehabilitation (OR) assessment

In addition to the standard report this addresses the client's motivation and willingness to return to work and includes a return to work programme if required. A medical summary compiled by a medical doctor is included.

Psychological Treatment

Moving Minds has a nationwide network of over a thousand clinical and counselling psychologists, cognitive behaviour therapists and EMDR therapists. We have clinicians specialising in working with children, adults and older people. We also have a counselling network for those individuals that need support through difficult stages in their lives.

Additionally, neuropsychologists and psychiatrists can offer a useful adjunct to treatment in cases where neurological injury is suspected or in cases of severe depression or other psychiatric conditions.

Just as some treatments are more effective for a specific condition than others, different conditions usually require a specific number of sessions. PTSD needs on average 10-12 sessions, travel phobia 6-8 sessions, adjustment disorders 12-15, severe depression 12-15 and anxiety and panic disorder 10-15.

Sessions of one hour’s duration are manageable for most patients/clients. One or two sessions of 90 minutes duration may be helpful when tackling the core traumatic memory in EMDR. However, most people find working on distressing material exhausting and start to tire after 50-60 minutes. An insistence on 90 minutes or two hour sessions may not necessarily be in the patient’s best interest. Even in the NHS it is rare for therapists to use 90 minute or two hour sessions.

Exposure sessions (for example a spider phobic being confronted with a live spider or a driving phobic being in a car), may be longer than 60 minutes as different people may need different lengths of time to “habituate” or get used to the fearful situation before their anxiety dissipates.

There are many other treatment approaches, some more helpful than others. Cognitive-analytic psychotherapy, schema therapy and rational emotive behaviour therapy all share principles of CBT and are legitimate and helpful.

Specialised comprehensive assessments

A neuropsychological assessment is sometimes necessary if the client has or might have had a brain injury. This will help to determine the level of cognitive impairment if present as well as the psychological impact of the injury in terms of symptoms that can be treated and those that are more permanent and call for management.
A psychiatric assessment may be necessary if psychotropic medication is required.  For example, in cases where individuals are so severely depressed that their concentration and memory is temporarily impaired due to very low mood they may not be able to make use of psychological treatment such as Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT).
A medico-legal report can be provided if evidence of the client's psychological injury is needed in court.  The specialist author may also be asked to appear in court as an expert witness.

Standard (Comprehensive) Psychological assessment

This report is helpful when there is either an absence of relevant psychological/psychiatric or medico-legal reports and the pre-morbid history, diagnosis, current problem severity and suitability for treatment is unknown. The assessment also includes the motivation or otherwise of the client/patient. A medical summary of all the provided medical reports, compiled by an experienced medical doctor is included in this report.

This assessment is useful for personal injury cases and routinely uses psychometric measures to provide objective supportive information.

Telephone Triage (Psychological or Medical)

Moving Minds offers a telephone triage service to insurers or solicitors. The triage is conducted by an experienced psychological clinician, rather than a nurse or occupational therapist as the aim of the triage is to establish whether psychological problems are present and whether its severity warrants a face to face assessment, telephone support and relevant educational material, or no intervention whatsoever. The medical triage offers an opinion from a senior doctor.
