Absence Management


The financial and social cost of employees being absent from work as a result of mental health problems is ever increasing. A study in carried out in the financial year 2002/3 by the Centre for Mental Health calculated that the economic and social costs of mental health problems amounted to £77.4 billion. Updated figures for 2009/10, using the same calculations, now suggest this figure to be £105.2 billion

Common Mental Health Problems in the Wordplace

The most common mental health problems in the workplace are:

•    Stress

•    Depression

•    Panic

•    Anxiety

•    A multitude of physical ailments such as back pain and headaches.

Early recognition of problems within the workplace are the key to making savings on absenteeism/presenteeism. Early recognition of problems before absence from work or intervention as soon as absence occurs will prevent long term problems and associated loss of productivity.

Treatment

The choice treatments for work related mental health problems are face-to-face CBT and CBT based telephone support. These are most successful when:

•    the problem that is at the root of the absence from work is identified

•    targets for treatment are focused

•    there is a positive attitude and motivation for treatment

•    the person identifies with their work role or another role is available

•    the person remains in contact with their workplace

•    a graduated return to work is possible
