NHS Waiting List Initiative Success
10:24 on Friday 29th July 2011Moving Minds successfully and cost effectively assisted an IAPT (Increased Access To Psychological Therapies Service) in an NHS Foundation Trust when they were faced with a waiting list of over 400 patients needing counselling, over a period of only 14 weeks.
The Moving Minds team contacted everybody on the waiting list which resulted in approximately 50% of individuals expressing a need for a telephone assessment. After the assessment, 60 people were found to need psychiatric care due to the seriousness of their illness, a number of people needed longer term treatment than the project allowed and a few people realised after speaking to our trained psychological case coordinators that they no longer need further assistance. The remainder received counselling from the Moving Minds counselling network, as usually overseen both psychologically and medically by highly experienced clinicians. Despite the brevity of the intervention (4 sessions), 6 individuals returned to work after having come off benefits and many other clients expressed their satisfaction at having the opportunity to receive help with their problems.
This intervention illustrated the usefulness of involving a specialised, experienced and long established psychological service provider in supporting NHS initiatives in a highly cost effective and timely manner thus offering the best of both worlds to those on the waiting list.
