Most Recent Research Results: Moving Minds, June 2008
In the largest sample size in the world of individuals who were involved in a road traffic accident in the UK, Moving Minds has analysed the results of treatment in a consecutive series of patients
692 patients had all acquired a trauma related psychological condition as a result of a road accident, typically 21 months before referral for treatment
Men and women, children and older people were studied
PTSD (Posttraumatic Stress Disorder), Travel Anxiety and other conditions were commonly present, due to the preceding accident.
Treatment findings
All patients were offered evidence based, trauma-focused psychological treatment, namely CBT (Cognitive Behaviour Therapy) and/or EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing). (These are the two treatments recommended by NICE - The National Institute of Health and Clinical Excellence). Generic counsellors were not used.
Treatment was carried out by mental health professionals with membership of their respective professional bodies. They also had additional training in CBT and/or EMDR and knowledge of psychological trauma
- - In four out of every five patients treatment was successful or the patients showed much improvement
- - Results were judged both subjectively and objectively, the latter by the use of industry standard psychometric scores.
- - Four out of five patients required 12 or fewer sessions to achieve beneficial results.
- - Work status at the time of the accident is an important variable in successful psychological rehabilitation
Additional findings
- - Men and women did equally well
- - Individuals from all socio-economic backgrounds did equally well
- - Children under 16 and individuals between 60- 86 did even better with treatment than those in mid life
These results inform Moving Minds' Treatment programmes
